Tamás graduated from Eötvös Loránd University as a physicist and obtained his PhD in statistical physics at the same university. He also began his career at the Physics Institute of Eötvös Loránd University. Later, he gradually shifted towards mathematics, and at present is an assistant professor at the Mathematical Institute of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His interest in physics remained, however; for several years he has been one of the teachers involved in selecting, preparing and leading the Hungarian IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) team.
