The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamentals of political theory and political philosophy, particularly as they relate to the institution of the state. Students will learn about theories of the function and goal of the state, the role of justice and democracy within the state, ideas about the limits of state power and contemporary challenges to the liberal democratic state, such as populism or globalisation. The course will prepare students for university courses on political theory, political philosophy, legal theory, and to a limited degree moral philosophy and the history of ideas. It is suitable for students wishing to engage with political science, philosophy, or law.
