The course attempts to trace China’s relative position in the world system of global capitalism throughout the centuries. It discusses, from China’s perspective, the ‘centuries of humiliation’ by the West, as well as the devastation caused by the Maoist system. The course then describes Deng Xiaoping’s ‘reform and opening’ strategy and its consequences for rapid economic growth. The defining elements of the Chinese model are described as a form of state capitalism, similar to previous examples of the Far Eastern development state, such as Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
