This course is intended for students wishing to gain an introduction to Comparative Literature. We will use literary theory to come to grips with the three canonical texts of literary modernism: Kafka’s Metamorphosis; Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground, and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. We will explore such modernist themes as the struggle for power, pathology, irrationality, and alienation.
