Medical anthropology is the study of health, illness, and the prevention and treatment of illness in various cultures and societies. What is ‘alternative medicine’, and what makes it ‘alternative’? How do people of other cultures view health and healing? What are different beliefs about why people fall ill, and the best ways to cure them? This module will offer an introduction to the broad spectrum of medical anthropology, from exploring the beliefs and practices of various cultures around the world, to looking at how specific illnesses are treated both abroad and at home, and understanding how governing bodies can influence the health and well-being of a nation.
