The course covers the core underlying principles of neuroscience at the cellular level, including an overview of the structure and function of neurons and glia, the maintenance of the resting membrane potential and action potential generation, synapses and synaptic plasticity and communication between cells. Students are required to read about these topics outside of the class and will then be given a short quiz to test their understanding. The topics will be discussed in class before recent relevant research data is introduced, highlighting that even the core principles are in the process of being constantly updated. Students are encouraged to contribute opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of the research and the potential significance of the findings.
