This course applies the basic skills of the historian – analysis of sources, weighing of alternative explanations, investigation of cause, criticism of ideology, balancing of outcomes, creation of models – to the question of modern Britain. What can Anglo-Saxon historiography reveal about the ideas and institutions than underlie British society and the British polity? What does the discipline of history tell us about its present state?
