Realities of Sustainability – Event Series on Climate Change (8th Feb – 13th Feb, 2021)

Between 8th February and 13th February, every day, prestigious experts and Milestone Student Societies will hold interactive online events connected to the topic of sustainability. Read this open letter from Milestone’s Head of Student Representative Council, Kinga Pőcze, about the inspiration behind the week. After reading the letter you’ll find the list of programs and links for registration at the end of the page. We hope you can join us!

Dear Human,

One evening, I made popcorn with the help of coconut oil at home to accompany me watching David Attenborough’s series, Our Planet. Little did I know, the production of the oil I used for my popcorn itself reduced many animals’ natural habitat, such as orangutans, by cutting out the beautiful, lively, and enormous trees in order to plant Coconut trees instead. Of course, I couldn’t throw out my popcorn because that would’ve been wasting food as the struggle with famine in developing countries came to my mind. I was lost, and I felt guilty.

How to cope with the guilt? I wanted to compensate for my actions against the environment with impactful efforts supporting environmental and social sustainability. Thus, I came up with the idea to organize an event series called ‘Realities of Sustainability’ to broaden my knowledge about sustainable development and climate action, which other people would benefit from.

To create change by action, we need to have a better understanding of what is really happening. During the week (8th – 14th February) I would like you to come with me and discover the realities of sustainability. With Peter Healey, Oxford professor, we will learn more about climate action and the governance of greenhouse gas removals, which are the core problems of global warming; János Mező, the Greenpeace executive director Hungary, who will share the mindset activists with us; with Athropolis Egyesület, who will share good practices in teaching sustainability. Alongside our events, as the Head of Student Representative Council, I have collaborated with some societies of our Institute to bring the topic closer to our fellow students and anyone else interested.

Our task at first is to educate ourselves, which then can turn into actions. You and I, and the other fellow humans, are the only ones who can change the future for the next generations, and we must change NOW. Let’s start it together, here, between the 8th and the 14th of February, let’s continue it together from the 15th of February.

Looking forward to meeting you,

With the greatest love,

Kinga Pőcze

someone who strives for change now.
