Historiography focuses on three objectives. It is intended to help students expand their knowledge on the methodology of historical research and the forms of reasoning that historians employ to arrive at truth claims. It also aims to expose the liminal nature of the discipline between arts and sciences – and help students understand the debates that surround historical explanations, methodologies of research and epistemological issues. Finally, it will introduce students to various schools of historical thought, from the history of ideas through economic history to microhistory, as well as show how ideological commitments shape historical accounts and even historical theory. The case-study to exemplify the theoretical approaches will be Eastern Europe, with a strong emphasis on Ukraine.
