The aim of this module is threefold. First, it aims to explore the diversity of legal arguments that may clash in judging a single act – taking a life – albeit in its many renditions. In doing so, it will offer an opportunity for students to acquaint themselves with some of the core concepts and questions of criminal law from a comparative perspective, touching upon the approaches found in German, Dutch, and English criminal law. Second, the module aims to engage students with exercises that will allow them to hone their skills in reading and comprehending legal texts, undertaking legal analyses and drafting, and to prepare them for problem-based learning scenarios. Third, and foremost, it hopes to nurture curiosity for the matters and materials discussed, the methods employed, and neighbouring disciplines touched upon. Evidently, the course will be most useful for those considering to study law or criminology, but could also be helpful for prospective students of philosophy and sociology.
