As 68% of the world population is projected to live in urban areas by 2050, the importance of social questions related to cities is also growing. This Urban Geography module provides a broad overview of the topics related to urban societies, urbanisation and the relationship between society and space. The content of the module is based on a selection of seminal journal articles written by renowned experts of the selected topics ranging from spatial approaches to numerous social questions. Specifically, these topics are social differentiation in space, gentrification, touristification and the critique of universal urban political economy and post-socialist cities. During the lessons, we would discuss the assigned readings based on prompts assigned by the module leader. The common issues behind all these topics are social justice, social inequalities, housing rights and the right to the use of space.
