Welfare Economics

This advanced economics module applies the core concepts of microeconomics to a series of pressing issues of social policy making. These include the housing and labour markets, health, education, pensions, crime-prevention, and eventually the ways to finance these through taxation. During the module students will see the applicability of abstract economic models in key areas of government functioning and thus learn to link their existing knowledge of economics to real life questions. On top the module will aim to link these areas to one another as well as to link micro and macroeconomic policy together. The module will focus on the human and policy side of economics and will put less emphasis on models and calculation. Nonetheless familiarity with the models introduced in the Microeconomics module and with common market failures will be assumed and required. Intended for students preparing their university applications in Economics (Bsc, BA, or in any combination), Quantitative methods in the Social Sciences, Social Policy, Land Economy, Development Studies or Education.
