This course aims to provide students with an overview of the novel within the context of English literature. Covering both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, students will, with particular reference to opening paragraphs/chapters, explore the ways in which the novelist engages with his or her reader, promotes ideas and themes, introduces character, portrays setting and background, and heightens the readers’ awareness of subsequent developments. Additionally, consideration will be given to language – forms of expression – genre, time and place. Students will be required to read one full length novel over the eight week period upon which will be based a final essay assignment. Each session will, in the main, centre for discussion purposes upon a text or texts. Students will be expected to formulate and express ideas and opinions.
