This module introduces social movements throughout history that came to life in response to racial, gender and economic injustices. Students will learn about the different types of injustice that prompted people to mobilise, and reflect on their contemporary forms. The course will introduce a wide set of forms in which different movements took shape, and the arguments and strategies that activism and political resistance employed. We will touch upon the roles of those affected by the particular types of injustice concerned, and the roles of those more privileged. We will discuss the abolitionist, civil rights and Black Lives Matter movements (racism); the suffragette, shelter and women’s circles movements (sexism); and unionised action, strikes and picketing (class and economic injustice). By the end of the course, students will be capable of recognising unjust social relations, understand the ways in which mobilisation and direct action strategies correspond with the types of injustice concerned, and will reflect on their role as members of society.
