As the most influential national cinema, the American film industry has contributed to the formation of audiovisual stereotypes about ethnicity worldwide. Therefore, this seminar attempts to trace the development in the representations of race across select periods of American cinema. The covered themes are (1) images of race in the early silent film, (2) Classical Hollywood cinema and black characters, (3) Blaxploitation film and (4) ethnicity in the new Hollywood. While the covered themes and periods are organised in a linear fashion, the course does not aim to offer a comprehensive picture, but rather focuses on the development of historical trends. Through discussions, screenings and readings, the main goal is to collectively develop critical skills in the analysis of motion pictures as social documents.
