The Geography of Success

August 16, 2017 | Milestone Institute

Another Milestone success story reaches beyond borders: our Seniors, Dávid Kliment and Zsombor Verkmann, have just recently returned from the Belgrade International Geography Olympiad after gaining several medals for their individual and joint performance as members of the Hungarian team at the prestigious student competition.

The 14th International Geography Olympiad was held in Belgrade, Serbia between the 2nd and 8th of August. Two out of the four Hungarian competitors were students from Milestone: Kliment Dávid and Verkmann Zsombor, who are currently enrolled in our Senior Programme. During the seven days of the competition, the students had to complete a written test, fieldwork exercises, and a multimedia project. The fieldwork was held in Tašmajdan, a forest near the city center. Exercises linked to physical geography dominated the competition: including soil, climate, and river studies. Out of 160 student delegates representing 42 different countries, the Hungarian team received a bronze medal, while Dávid and Zsombor got a silver for their performance at the geolympiad. Additionally, a cultural session and poster presentation were held, in which each team could present something about their country of origin to others.

The Milestoners made outstanding individual and collective achievements at the competition. Both of our students received a silver medal: Kliment Dávid with the 28th and Verkmann Zsombor with the 35th place. The students ranked between the 15th and the 40th place received a silver medal, while the top 15 were honored with gold medals.
