At the end of August, the Milestone Model United Nations (MUN) society participated at the annual MUNIST conference at Yeditepe University in Istanbul. For those who don’t know, Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations where students learn about diplomacy and international relations by representing another country’s position on a given issue.

At this particular conference, our delegation represented countries including Poland, Nigeria, The Republic of Korea, Latvia, Greece, Lithuania and France, in eight different committees. The Milestone delegates delivered a strong performance throughout, and in several committees, our members received awards for their contributions to the debate. In the Human Rights Committee, which discussed human rights violations in Iran, Milestone Junior year student Robert Panyi received the award for best delegate, which is given to one delegate in each committee. In the Group of 7 where sanctions against the Russian Federation were discussed, Sophomore András Sárosi received an ‘Honourable Mention’ for his performance, as did Senior Balázs Frei in the Historical NATO summit, which considered the role of NATO in the post- 9/11 era.

Outside the conference, the Milestone delegates also had time to explore the historic city of Istanbul and visit the most famous sights including the Topkapi palace, the Hagia Sophia, and the Blue Mosque.
